1. MIMA
Mima is a contemporary art gallery based in Middleborough, it is host to an ever-changing program of exhibitions which in the past have included works by Margaret Harrison, Louise Bourgeois and David Lynch. Alongside of its exhibitions, Mima also runs learning activities for schools and colleges as well as weekly drawing classes.

2. The Biscuit Factory
Based in Newcastle and housed in a former Victorian warehouse, The Biscuit Factory is the UK’s largest independent contemporary art, craft and design gallery. Hosting four major exhibitions a year that celebrates the work of emerging and mid-career artists, there is always something new to see. Currently the seasonal featured artists included Ostinelli and Priest, and Ade Adesina amongst others.

Gallerina
3.If you're looking for a Gallery whose focus is local art, then Gallerina may be for you. Based in Darlington, Gallerina's aim- by their own admission- is to exhibit "the best and largest collection of original contemporary art in the North of England". Their current exhibition of work by local Artists James Patterson is not to be missed- his portraiture inspired by an early love of pop art is fun, fresh, and exciting.

4. York Art Gallery
If you are looking for art with a bit more history, look no further than York Art Gallery. Situated in the beautiful historic city of York, it has collections through from the 14th century to more contemporary artwork. They also have an impressive decorative arts collection of more than 3,000 pieces, including a large collection of ceramics from Yorkshire potteries, dating from as early as the 1600s.

The Station
5. If it's a fun day out for all the family that you're interested in, then why not pop over to The Station in Richmond. Set inside a stunning Victorian railway building, as well as an amazing art gallery and exhibition space, The Station is also home to a cinema, a brewery and three artisanal food-sellers.
